Yumiko Kayukawa Show

The Kantor Gallery
is pleased to host the follow-up show for Yumiko Kayukawa’s success
last spring. The response to Kayukawa’s work has been overwhelming;
her use of nature interlaced with youthful pop culture, fashion, and
fetishism encourage her viewers to connect with her work on a
plethora of levels. Her Japanese comic-book style paintings have
continued to sell out shows across the country since 2001. It seems
the American public has tapped into a cultural phenomena of
fascination with Japanese pop art.
Precisely rendered
flat, bold color compositions have gained the admiration of fellow
painters, as well art critics and buyers across the country. Vodka
Magazine’s Brangien Davis writes, “Cool isn’t the half of it.
Kayukawa’s work is a sizzling stir-fry of rock and roll, high
fashion, American pop culture and traditional Japanese artwork… It’s
the delicious frisson of the dichotomies that leads to such
explosive, original art.” In spite of her tremendous success
Kayukawa has stayed true to her roots. Her experience of growing up
in the small town of Naie in Hokkaido, Japan provided inspiration
for various nuances within her work.
Upon a visit to the
United States in 1997 Kayukawa was captivated. This interest in
American culture can be seen in her bright whimsical artwork. The
vibrancy of the beauties is offset by the incorporation of wildlife
and traditional Japanese art. Attractive Japanese girls dressed in
fashionable clothes are nestled amongst Kanji characters and
blooming flowers producing modern inventions in perfect synergy
between the old and new.
Yumiko Kayukawa’s
will be exhibiting her artwork at the Kantor Gallery with an opening
artist reception on Thursday April 1st from 6:00 - 9:30pm. Exhibit
will run through May 1st. For more information please call
