Edward Ruscha

Edward Ruscha's art embodies the spirit of contemporary American more thoroughly than that of nearly any other artist of his generation. His work is at once cool, neat, self-assured, and mischievously witty. Ruscha has chosen to depict America by means of its products, from the sterile apartments and filing station that dot its countryside to the pills and paraphernalia that allow its citizens to function comfortable. Nowhere in Ruscha's art is there any overt suggestion of commentary, and one learns without surprise that the artist resides in Hollywood. Though much of Ruscha's work is associated with California, it has an international appeal.
